Saskatchewan The British Columbia government started online gambling in North America, but other provinces in Canada have already caught on to the idea. Ontario has announced plans for online casinos, and now Saskatchewan is looking into the plan.
Online gambling has become a cash cow for countries that have regulated the industry. Saskatchewan officials were careful to acknowledge a definite move to online casinos, but they did say they would study how the gaming works in other provinces.
Opposition to online gambling almost immediately popped up after the announcement. Those opposed believe much more research should be done to ensure that all of the social ills that could come with the gambling are covered.
"all these things that are unknown should be examined closely before wasting a considerable amount of taxpayer money,' said Kevin Yates, House Leader for the NDP. "Without any of the work done, we shouldn't undertake going there."
The pro-online casino legislators are eyeing the millions of dollars that would be generated from the online casino. Supporters believe that the millions of dollars would far outweigh the start-up costs associated with creating the online site.
While Canadian provinces are moving swiftly, they may not be moving quick enough. Lawmakers in the US are pursuing legislation that would regulate online gambling in the country. If that were to occur, it could take much of the business away from Canadian online sites.
