PlayNow.com It was a long month for British Columbia residents who were waiting for the online casino site PlayNow.com to re-launch. This weekend, gamblers received their wish of once again being able to place bets online in B.C.
PlayNow.com was re-launched by the B.C. Lottery Corp. just a month after the site was shut down for security issues. When originally launched in July, the site had to shut down just hours later after personal information was being shared.
The B.C. government ensured that an outside company checked to make sure that the security problems were fixed. The problem, according to the B.C. Lottery, was with the software. Now, the slots are again rolling in B.C. and gamblers could not be happier.
"I had waited years for a legal form of online gambling here, and when the site launched I was ecstatic," said Sam Bevel. "When they shut down, I became skeptical, but now they are back up and running and it seems like a secure place to play."
British Columbia was faced with the same issues as other North American areas in that gamblers already were betting online at offshore sites. The security breach did not help convince gamblers they should switch to the lottery site, but the idea that it is legal at PlayNow.com has swayed some online players.
British Columbia may have opened the door to full fledged online gambling in Canada. Several other provinces, including Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Alberta have all looked into the possibility of operating online gambling sites in the near future.
