Rep. Barney Frank If US online casino players are going to gain the protection of their government while they gamble, the Democrats will have to secure many upset wins on Tuesday. The mid-term elections will likely determine the immediate future of online gambling regulations in the country.
For the past two years, Democrats have held a majority in both the House and the Senate. It was a dream scenario for online poker players who thought they would finally receive regulations in the US. Instead, the Democrats have fumbled their opportunity.
Representative Barney Frank has been unable to move along his proposed bill that would terminate the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act and bring the foundation for Internet gambling regulations. Frank did get his bill through the House Financial Services Committee, but it came too late this year.
Voters will go to the polls on Tuesday and it is likely that the Republicans will win back the majority in the House. That would all but kill any online gambling regulations for at least the next two years.
There is still a slight chance that legislation gets approved in the Senate, but they seem much less concerned over the millions of US citizens that are currently playing poker, slots, and other casino games at online sites that are not regulated.
An outside chance still exists that the Democrats keep control of the House, but even then, it seems unlikely that Frank would advance his bill before the new year. That would mean the process would have to start all over again in committee.
The prospects do not look good for online casino players, but there is always hope. Unfortunately, at this point in the game, the odds seem much better at the casinos than they do in the US government.
