Online Gambling? Senators in New Jersey today will have the opportunity to do something that no other lawmakers have done in the history of the US. Senators will vote on legislation that would create a regulated system of online gambling in New Jersey.

Several decades ago, New Jersey made the bold move to follow Nevada into the casino gambling industry. At the time, other states looked at New Jersey and Nevada as rebel states that were selling their souls for revenue.

Now, decades later, almost every state in the US has some form of gambling, and dozens of states have moved into the casino industry. For those who choose to do so, they may now look back and see that New Jersey was one of two pioneers in the casino industry.

Today, the state could become pioneers in the online gambling industry as well. Internet gambling is prohibited on a national level, but each state has the right to create their own laws, and senators appear ready to give Internet gambling a shot.

The Atlantic City casino industry has been struggling since the economic recession and competition from other states is keeping AC casinos from full recovery. Internet gambling is looked at as a way to once again claim gambling dominance in the Northeast.

Of course, part of the law that will be voted on today says that residents from other states will not be allowed to bet at online casinos licensed in New Jersey. That means that the state will not recover the thousands of customers that have been lost to Pennsylvania.

If approved, the law creating online gambling regulations would become the first of its kind in the US, and it likely would set off a firestorm on the issue. Lawmakers from California and Florida have also considered Internet gaming regulations, but neither state has had a piece of legislation get as far as the one senators will vote on later today in New Jersey.
