Now that New Jersey senators have passed a bill that will legalize online casinos in the state, other states may not be far behind. In fact, New Jersey may have opened up a can of worms that lawmakers around the US will be unable to ignore.

On a federal level, US lawmakers are still fumbling with the idea of online gambling regulations. New Jersey taking the issue into their own hands could provide a valuable blueprint for the rest of the country.

One of the biggest reasons the New Jersey lawmakers moved on the issue before federal legislators changed US laws was the tax rate. By regulating the industry on their own, New Jersey can secure a twenty-five percent tax on all bets. Federally, only a six percent tax could be levied.

The difference in tax rate gives individual states the incentive to regulate the industry on their own. What is unknown, however, is how federal laws are going to effect New Jersey's bid to become the first Internet gambling state in the country.

Lawmakers in New Jersey believe that by limiting the betting to only in-state residents and foreigners, they steer clear of federal laws. The World Trade Organization, however, may have a problem with the international customer base.

Already the WTO is unhappy with the US because of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that prohibits licensed online gaming sites based outside the US from doing business inside the country. If New Jersey online casinos start stealing customers from international sites, trade agreements may be infringed upon.

No matter how the laws shake down, one thing is certain, New Jersey lawmakers have opened up the possibilities for dozens of states in the US, and what comes next could be a full-scale online gambling explosion throughout the country.
