Hello, Online Gambling! If there was hope that the new administration was going to bring change to their industry, online gambling companies have turned that hope to anticipation. President Obama's choice for US Trade Representative, Ron Kirk, is clearly a win for Internet gambling in the US.
Above all else that Kirk pledges if he is confirmed for the job, he is placing an emphasis on upholding existing trade agreements. One of the trade agreements that has been abused without consideration by the Bush Administration was the one dealing with online gambling.
The US is currently in violation of trade agreements with the European Union after creating a law in the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that keeps EU members from being able to operate freely in the US without worry of prosecution.
In addition to that, the US has repeatedly disregarded trade agreements that would allow licensed online gambling operators in Antigua and Barbuda from conducting their business. That has caused a problem with the World Trade Organization that the US still has not resolved.
Kirk claims that he will make adhering to current agreements a priority over creating new agreements. If he holds true to his word, that could mean that overseas operators would once again be able to legally go after US online players.
The online community has been buzzing ever since the new year began. Representative Barney Frank is expected to introduce legislation any day that would overturn the UIGEA. If that happens, and Kirk holds true to what he believes, then the world of Internet gambling may soon be opened up once and for all.
