Online Gambling Bust In New Jersey Sends Message

Bergen County Online gambling may soon become legal if the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is overturned by the new administration in the US, but sports betting will not be an area of gambling that will be included in that legislation.
This past week, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli sent a message that should have come across loud and clear to organized crime members. Online gambling will not be tolerated in his county.
Twenty-eight people were arrested with ties to a multi-million dollar Internet gambling operation. The operation, according to prosecutors, was divided into two different areas, bookmaking and money laundering. Thomas Conforti and John DeFroscia were the suspected leaders of the group. Both men have ties to the Genovese crime family.
"There are a lot of bettors out these that tomorrow are going to read the paper...and are going to say, 'You know, maybe I better really stop this,'" said Molinelli. He went on to say that is one of the objectives to these type of raids.
The raid was executed in Westchester County and North Jersey. During the raid, $1.2 million was seized by police, that according to JerseyNorth. All twenty eight people that were arrested pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to promote gambling and promoting gambling.
