BetOnSports When BetOnSports was at the top of its industry, it was taking in billions of dollars in online wagers. The company was only formed in 1995, and in less than a decade, they became one of the biggest online gambling operators in the world.
Then came the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006. The law would cause BetOnSports executives to be indicted in the US, and its founder, Gary Kaplan, is in jail awaiting a trial in September.
Several other of those indicted reached plea deals that were announced on Monday. Kaplan's brother, Neil Scott Kaplan, and his sister, Lori Beth Kaplan-Multz, both lead guilty Monday to racketeering charges. Gary Kaplan's personal assistant, Penelope Ann Tucker also plead guilty in US District Court in St. Louis.
The three are not expected to serve jail time under the agreement, but full details of the plea were not revealed. The brother and sister are expected to have to spend some time on a halfway house coupled with a short period of home arrest. Tucker is expected to receive probation.
The company came under scrutiny by the US when they ran ads claiming they were a legal online gambling site. The US contends that they were not legal, and that they were falsely advertising. Prosecutors also claimed that the money generated from the gambling site was used to further the operation.
