European Union Already France, the US, and several other countries have been notified by the European Commission that they are in violation of trade agreements due to their online casino laws. Now, Belgium becomes the latest country to join that group.
European Commission regulators have reviewed laws that were sent to them from Belgium and they have found the laws to be in violation of trade agreements. There are a couple of specific areas where the country is in violation, according to the regulators.
Belgium, like France, has tried to force their Internet service providers to block Internet gambling sites from other countries. This is a severe violation of trade agreements, and the European Commission denounced the law.
The laws in Belgium are not yet signed, but if they do become law the European Commission could begin the process of sanctions against the country. They have followed the same procedure in Belgium as they have in the US and France.
The US has, up until this point, ignored a grace period that was given to them by the European Commission to fix their online gambling laws so they comply with trade agreements. The government has been busy dealing with the economic recession, so the Internet gambling issue has been put on the back burner.
If the US does not comply, the Commission may bring the case against the US to the World Trade Organization. Although they have not yet complied, Representative Barney Frank has proposed legislation that would bring the US into compliance by legalizing and regulating online gambling.
