Ukraine A high ranking Ukraine official, First Vice-Premiere Oleksandr Turchynov has reiterated the governments position regarding online gambling in the country. He claims Internet gambling is illegal under Ukraine law.
The country has passed a law that bans gambling business in the country. There was some confusion as to whether that law was just about land-based gambling, or if Internet gambling was to be included.
"Internet casinos are a form of gambling business," said Turchynov at a briefing Friday in Kyiv, "and as the law doesn't specify the form of gambling, such organizations should be also closed."
While the gambling licenses of many operators have expired, the groups are hoping that they will regain the licenses come the fall. It is not yet known whether that is realistic or not.
While many countries have started to expand their gambling laws, Ukraine has pulled back. Internet gambling has become the popular outlet of choice for gamblers, and it has been a difficult task for governments to sniff out the illegal activity.
In the US, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was put in place to stop online gambling. To date, it has been an unsuccessful law, with the US still being the worldwide leader in terms of Internet gambling.
