Italy First it was Spain, now it is Italy. It seems as though many big countries around the world are tuning into the wants of their residents when it comes to online casinos. Italy is preparing to make their splash into the online gambling market.
The US is undoubtedly the worldwide leader when it comes to online gambling players, and that is in a country where Internet gambling is looked down upon and criminalized by the government. Italy, on the other hand, is hoping that rules are in place by the end of the year to begin legalized online casino gambling.
"In today's world, online gambling has become an accepted part of society," said observer Walter Backman, "even in countries where gambling has been dismissed by the government for years, the laws are changing and the governments are adapting."
The energy behind the new online gaming push in Italy comes from the economy. The poor economy is forcing lawmakers to consider ways that revenue can be generated. Online gambling is one of the most profitable businesses in the world.
The US is just now starting to see the error of their ways from 2006, when a largely Republican Congress enacted the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Representative Barney Frank has proposed legislation that would overturn the law and lay the foundation for legalized and regulated Internet gambling in the country.
