British Columbia British Columbia does not want to be left out in the cold when it comes to the millions of dollars that are being generated at online casinos. That is why the B.C. Lottery Corp. plans to begin offering online casino games by next March.
The move is creating much controversy, especially since the PlayNow website, which is operated by by the B.C. Lottery Corp., has announced plans to up the gambling limit from $120 a week, to $10,000 a week. It is clearly a move in preparation of the new casino games.
Other jurisdictions around the world are starting to catch on to the large revenue stream that can be created by online casinos. They are starting to believe it is better for them to receive the money, than some offshore operation.
"Rather than it all going to offshore places like Antigua, there's an opportunity to keep it here in British Columbia," said B.C. Lottery Corporation CEO, Michael Graydon. The move by British Columbia to offer blackjack, poker, roulette and other casino games will be the first such move in North America.
The US government has made online gambling illegal back in 2006 with the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Currently, Representative Barney Frank has proposed legislation that would overturn the UIGEA and legalize Internet gambling, but that will not be done before B.C. starts offering the casino games online in March of 2010.
