Senator Ron Wyden from Oregon has decided against his proposed amendment that would have given tax revenue from online gambling to health care reform. Wyden now claims that the two issues are too big to be discussed together.

Originally, Wyden proposed the amendment that revenue from Internet gambling, which could top $1 billion a year, go towards helping restructure health care in the US. The amendment, however, was contingent on a proposed Bill from Representative Barney Frank passing in Congress.

While Rep. Frank is gaining much support from lawmakers who believe Internet gambling should be regulated, it is not certain that his Bill will pass. Without that assurance, it would be impossible for Wyden to move forward with his amendment.

Jennifer Hoelzer, Wyden's communications director stated that the senator does not want to introduce a "new contentious issue" into the debate that is already taking place around the health care issue. She went on to say that Sen. Wyden will wait until the appropriate time and then re-introduce the amendment.

The amendment, not surprisingly, had the support of lawmakers who have been backing the Frank Bill. Billions of dollars is being lost to companies outside of the US, and the lawmakers want to ensure that US online gamblers are protected from less than ethical operations that are currently taking their action.
