It looks like the European Commission will soon have to fire up their efforts to keep European Union member nations in line. Poland may become the latest in the list of EU countries that bans Internet gambling.

The Commission has already conducted investigations into several countries and alerted them that they were in violation of EU trade agreements. The most notable of these countries is the US.

In the US, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was created, and almost immediately the Commission responded. Earlier this year, the Commission gave the US a grace period to change their laws to come into compliance with trade agreements. If the US fails to do so, the Commission will bring their case to the World Trade Organization.

Other countries have been in a similar situation as the US, but have moved towards compliance. Spain, Italy, and France are among those who have, or are in the process of, changing their online gambling laws.

Poland officials have been discussing a country-wide ban of gambling after a scandal hit the Polish government. If the ban becomes law, it would severely hurt online gambling operators who are licensed and running legally in other EU countries.

The Poland laws are not yet set in stone, and the US has legislation on the table from Representative Barney Frank that would overturn the UIGEA and set up a regulated system in the country for Internet gambling.
