BetonSports is now a defunct online gambling website, but while it was operating, the site took in over a billion dollars in revenue from US customers. On Friday, former Chief Executive David Carruthers was sentenced to thirty-three months in prison for his role in the company.

BetonSports was considered one of the pioneering sites when it comes to the current online gambling explosion. The company, however, was operating illegally, according to US law.

Late last year, the company's founder, Gary Kaplan, admitted his guilt, and received fifty-one months in federal prison. Kaplan was also ordered to give up millions of dollars to the US government.

As for Carruthers, he is one of the ten people who were indicted back in 2006. The accused violated the Wire Act, and many have pleaded guilty. Two of the men are still at large, but Carruthers admitted his guilt.

"I understand now that the business was operating outside the laws of the United States," said Carruthers in a statement to Judge Carol E. Jackson, as reported by Bloomberg News.

The US government has been busy in the past year seizing bank accounts of online gambling sites that were being used to pay US customers. In the meantime, lawmakers in the country are looking into changing the current Internet gambling laws.
