Estonia While many of the European Union countries struggle to meet the online gambling standards that are set within trade agreements, little-known country, Estonia, is leading the way. Estonia has recently legalized online gambling.
The country, while small, still has financial burdens that were created by the global recession. Those financial obligations have led Estonia to allow their residents to legally participate at online casinos.
Estonia becomes the latest in a group of countries that has opened its doors to online gambling. The industry is looked at as an opportunity for governments to help bridge budget shortcomings.
Playtech and the Olympic Casino Group will be the beneficiaries of the new law changes in Estonia. "We are truly glad of this opportunity to start our partnership with Olympic as the leading entertainment provider in Central and Eastern Europe," said Playtech's Executive Manager, Mor Weizer, as reported by Poker News Daily.
With online gambling becoming prevalent in many countries, the major online casinos are still waiting for changes to the US laws regarding Internet gambling. The US remains the top market in the world for online gambling, but many companies have stayed away from accepting US players since the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was created in 2006.
Representative Barney Frank and other lawmakers are working towards overturning the UIGEA and setting up a regulated system of online gambling in the country.
