Iowa The race to become the first state to regulate online gambling has begun in the US and Iowa was one of the states that could have carved the groundbreaking legislation. Instead, the Internet gambling issue may have stalled other expansion in the state.
Iowa lawmakers had been discussing the possibility of regulating online poker. The discussions, however, turned heated, and because the issue took up so much time, it left legislators little time to complete other expansion for gambling.
Among the main goals of lawmakers this session was to create legislation that would have allowed large poker tournaments at casinos that already exist in the state. Now, it appears Iowa will lose out on the revenue that could be generated by gambling expansion.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy was set to propose the poker tournament Bill, but now says he will not do so. McCarthy believes that there is not enough time left in the session for lawmakers to productively move along the legislation.
If gambling expansion does not occur this session, it will likely be a hot topic heading into the next couple of years. All across the US legalized gambling is rising, and states are using gambling as a way to survive the poor economy.
