Whether Canadian gamblers were going to the site to check out the games or to actually play, they came in thousands and it immediately slowed down the site. After a couple of hours, the Lottery Corporation decided it was time to shut down the site and regroup.

In the hours after the shutdown, website technicians were working to add severs and strengthen the site. Canadian officials were hoping that when the site was launched again, the problems would be gone for good.

"It is clear that the demand for online gambling regulations was great judging by the number of Canadians that attempted to access PlayNow.com," said Gaming Analyst Noah Black. "It shows just how excited people are to be able to gamble online in a safe environment."

PlayNow.com is the first North American online casino that is regulated by the government. The site has safeguards in place to ensure that underage gamblers cannot access the casino, and self-exclusion programs are available for potential problem gamblers.

Other Canadian provinces and the US government are looking into following the lead of British Columbia into the world of regulated Internet gambling. Many other countries have already licensed online gambling operators.
