Ontario waited only a couple of weeks before deciding that if online casinos are good for British Columbia, then they are also good for Ontario. Finance Minister Dwight Duncan announced on Tuesday that the province will be entering the world of online gambling.

Duncan explained that the future of business is on the Internet and that the province will now spend the next eighteen months working on developing the online casino. Once complete, the casino could generate millions of dollars for the local economy.

"Across Canada and around the world, online commerce is part of our everyday lives and OLG (Ontario Lottery Corp.) is excited to start the consultation process for online gambling and growing its marketplace in the future," said OLG Chairman Paul Godfrey.

The budget deficit facing Ontario lawmakers has grown to an unmanageable level, and moving in the direction will help fund some of the programs that may have been cut without Internet gambling revenue. It is estimated that over $400 million currently leaves the country for offshore online gaming sites.

"Many provinces in Canada are starting to see that there is a tremendous opportunity to not only bring millions of dollars in tax revenue, but to also set regulations that will protect their residents against corruption within the online gaming industry."

British Columbia has already launched their online casino, but they were forced to shut the site down after security issues. B.C. has opened the door for other provinces who did not want to be the first to regulate online gambling.
